My Ancestors - Previous Lifetimes
By Susanna Jade Angolani of ShivaDancer
My Mother and Father have both passed on - my mom still visits me at night through the little "happy face" night light I keep near my side of the bed. My dad visits in my dreams, usually in a very altered state, not like I remember him in my daylight consciousness. I miss them both very much but also am grateful I have gone through that difficult transition in life when parents die. They were old enough, in their eighties, and had lived complex, intriguing lives. I still have all my sisters and brother, but all my uncles and aunts from both sides have died. I never knew my grandparents - well, my grandpa on my mom's side died when I was eight, so I have faint memories of him. I miss having that elder wisdom storied past that many friends have recounted. I honor the native American lore that is rich in real and mythical stories. Family brings our first story to us, the one we are born into and are challenged by all of our lives. I basically left my blood relatives in my 20's to grow close to countless other brothers and sisters. I rarely see them as we live in states across the U.S. Am I sad about this - not really. We all have our own path and mine was not to remain in Los Angeles where I was born and where half of my family still resides. I love them, and care for them, but cannot live near them. The heart is a very safe place to keep all of our loved ones, and so accessible. I can touch them whenever I want by looking in my heart. I feel their joy, pain, success and sorrow. I feel my parents love holding me tight after all these years. I feel past lives lived in other countries hidden in the corners of my heart and mind. The universe is found pulsing through our arteries and veins, giving life to the micro-organisms that feed our cells. I find solace in these emotions that allow me to be here and now and not be concerned who a great-great-great grand parent might have been. I don't even want to know my blood lifeline - I feel it - I know it in a more expanded way. My other lives are filled with this heritage, to where one finally arrives at the knowledge that we all are indeed connected. The One in the Many. The Heart and Soul of a people, a place, a person; me. I am me and we are you and we are all together - John Lennon said that. It's a great line. I really believe it.

Contributor's Note
Once my mother traced our family heritage "almost" to the Pilgrims - it was so exciting thinking we had relatives from the Mayflower on our family tree. It wasn't so.
