Memories of Sandwiches

By Susanna Jade Angolani of Susanna Jade Art

Sandwiches

To this day I eat a lot of sandwiches – Bacon, lettuce and tomato, grilled cheese, vegetable wraps, subway-style sandwiches piled high with roast beef, lettuce, tomato, and all the fixin’s. What is a sandwich? Wikipedia’s definition:

A sandwich is a food item made of one or more slices of bread with one or more fillings. The bread can be used as is, or it can be coated with butter, oil, mustard or other condiments to enhance flavor and texture.

OK, that’s better, more inclusive. I like a good open-faced sandwich sometimes, like a piece of wheat toast smothered in left-over beef gravy with chunks of beef. Or that wonderful breakfast of slightly toasted bagel topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Delicious. I love a heated muffin with a fried egg placed between the two sides. When we were kids, we often had “fried egg sandwiches” for dinner, with a piece of melon on the side. The egg is totally cooked in a nice oil where the yolk has been pierced to allow it to cook faster. You got your protein and your fiber, and the fruit on the side makes for a really effective, quick meal.

When I lived in Italy I learned about “Panini,”or little sandwiches made with a variety of sumptuous Italian breads or foccacia, a pizza-like bread that tantalizes the palate. They were served warm to allow the cheese to melt and the bell peppers, olive oil, olives, and other condiments or meats to become their most flavorful best. Any trattoria or caffe would offer these delicious Panini – you could eat them at the location or take them to go. Marvelous.

My most precious memories of sandwiches belong to preparing my father his sack lunch for many years. He worked in Los Angeles as a pool maintenance provider for the rich and famous in Hollywood and other notable locations. One of his customers was Goldie Hawn; another Chuck Norris, another Gordon Scott, one of the first to play Tarzan. He would leave the house around 7 am, and return home around 5 pm. He drove across the entire San Fernando Valley into Hollywood and Beverly Hills, Malibu and beyond some days, in his fully equipped pick-up truck. Each day he would travel with his trusty sack lunch with two sandwiches; the first peanut butter and jelly on wheat or white bread, to serve as his breakfast. There would be a couple of pieces of fruit – a banana or an apple usually. Then at lunchtime he would eat his other sandwich, usually bologna or ham or a rare left-over meatloaf sandwich, with a bit of mayo, mustard and sometimes catsup. We always packed some cookies for quick energy, and perhaps some chips or frittos. Everyday my father had his peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast with his thermos of coffee, which was a constant. Then the lunch sandwich would vary. He always ate whatever was in the bag without complaining. I don’t know how a soul could be more reliable and grateful. I was so happy when I lived as an adult for a few years with my mom and dad so I could take over the “chore” of preparing these sack meals for my dear old father. Mom was completely tired of the routine, although she never tired of the money my dad brought home. That’s another story entirely.

They are both gone now, and have been for a number of years. Their memory will always live on in my heart, and the thought of those thousands of sandwiches remain a constant inspiration to the perseverance of my dad to carry on no matter how hot or cold the day, how long the day, or how small and boring the sandwiches were inside his perpetual sack lunch. He did look forward to the hot and saucy meals served for dinner. And I never tired of dreaming up new meals to please his sandwich-saturated appetite!

Contributor's Note

Growing up in America one eats a lot of sandwiches. It is the American Way, no? After all, the Great American Hamburger is indeed a beef sandwich. Just in time for the July 4th Celebration. Enjoy!
